The Not-So-Sexy Side of Rescue? Still Inspirational

The Not-So-Sexy Side of Rescue? Still Inspirational

Mornings aren’t terribly fun for night owls, unless you get an invite to the biggest, baddest (in the best possible sense) morning radio show in the land: WMMR’s Preston & Steve. Little did I or Steve Morrison realize where this moment in time would lead. (Poor guy hasn’t been able to get rid of me since!)

Philadoptables, an incredible organization that helps Philadelphia’s homeless animals, was throwing its annual Love Potions fundraiser. I was honored to be their emcee and we were all honored to be guests on the radio show. I had no idea that Steve was a huge animal advocate—especially of the feline variety.

Somehow I wrangled his number from him (big mistake on his part) and within days was blowing up his phone because of a litter of six bottle babies that desperately needed a hero. Someone had dropped them off at the local shelter, ACCT Philly, but because of Steve the babies ended up safe in Morris Animal Rescue’s foster program.

As Steve recalls, “I said the words that will live in infamy: ‘You really need to meet my wife.’” Yep! Clare Morrison and I have been fast friends ever since. In fact, she and Steve have a kitty named Hubert because of me. (It’s a bit of a touchy subject because I think Hubert is Morrison cat number nine and was only supposed to be a foster until he was well enough to be adopted. Ha! Not so much...)

In 2015, Clare founded an amazing and vital nonprofit that’s all about, as she says, “The not-so-sexy side of rescue.” She may not think it’s that sexy, most people have never even heard of what she advocates and funds (TNR or the trap, neuter and return of outdoor cats who are feral and the adoption of those who are socialized), but to the more than 2500 kitties that Mac’s Fund has helped since its inception, I’m sure they’re thinking it’s the sexiest thing ever.

So what inspired Clare’s and Steve’s dedication to help vulnerable and medically urgent cats? A kitty named Mac who, in fact, could leap tall refrigerators in a single bound. He’s also the inspiration for one of the characters you’ll meet in our next Gata Unbound volume. No one better to tell the tale of Mac’s Fund than the Morrison’s themselves (and in case you end up wondering, that's Dutch kneading Clare in the video and Chelsea, the lone canine amongst the feline set, lounging on the couch):
